Calm room
The Calm Room is an integral part of the school's Behaviour Management plan.
Operating daily, the Calm room provides a place for teachers to send children who are disruptive during school time and during lunch breaks.
Strengths
- staff and parents support the program;
- teachers can teach without constant interruption;
- children are listened to;
- children are safe;
- provides a caring environment;
- provides a tracking system to monitor behaviour,
- parents are informed about the process,
- rewards are provided as incentives.
Milestones
- a social skills program is being implemented;
- the Calm Room operates on a full time basis with a teacher and a teacher aide,
- a parent handbook has been prepared for the school Welcome Pack;
- staff have been inserviced in the changes and parents have been reminded of the procedures through parades, parent sessions and the school newsletter;
- availability of a behaviour management specialist/Guidance Officer. This resource is shared by the three Bay schools; and
- an off-site facility exists for anyone requiring 6-20 day suspension.
