Special Education programs

Education Queensland has specific criteria and processes for entry into special education programs. These processes include ascertainment and placement and involve personnel outside the school.

The students are enrolled in a regular class and their total learning program is a joint responsibility of the classroom and special education teachers.

Programs are developed collaboratively with the class teacher, parent/s and special education teachers. Goals and strategies are specified through an Individual Education Plan (IEP). To support a whole-of-school approach to uninterrupted key learning times for literacy and numeracy, special education students who are usually low achievers in these areas are given withdrawal teaching times.

Depending on timetabling constraints we aim to conduct these programs in the SEU four mornings per week from 9-12noon. For those students who need it, additional special programs are provided in areas of life skills and social skills, however, all students participate in mainstream programs for music, art, studies of society, science, physical education and LOTE lessons. They also participate in class oriented activities such as excursions, concerts and when possible playground times.

The Head of Special Education (HOSE) is a member of the whole school administration team. Special Education teachers and teacher aides are employed in the unit to help in the delivery of the program.
